My Diabetic Alert Dog alerting to a low blood sugar scent. To answer a few of the commenters.. Duncan is a Chesapeake Bay Retriever.. He is alerting to the chemical scent that is released in our bodies when our blood glucose levels are low / high. He was trained by taking samples of this scent .. samples are collected by having a diabetic that is experiencing a low/ high spit on a sterile piece of cotton / gauze and then stored carefully to assure the cotton cannot absorb any other scent. Now when he smells the scent on my breath.. or in my sweat.. he alerts. Scent training for this is very similar to training any other scent detecting dog.. bomb, drug, cadaver, rescue, etc.
