Whenever we notice is swelling in the midline of the next in the reason of the thyroid gland we have to suspect presence of thyroid nodule, thyroid nodules is nothing but is swelling in either one of the lobes or in the Isthmus of the thyroid gland. When a patient swallows the thyroid gland located in front of the wind pipe or the trachea moves with deglutition. So whenever the gland moves thyroid nodule also moves. On examination you can find either a single nodule which is called a solitary nodule, all that can be multiple nodules called multinodular goitre. Sometimes the entire thyroid gland can be hugely enlarged called collide goitre. Coming to evaluation whenever your thyroid gland is enlarged you have to do certain tests. One of the important test being thyroid function test T3, T4 and TSH estimation has to be done to detect the presence of either Hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism. The next test would be an ultrasound scan of the thyroid gland, the ultrasound scan detect whether it is a cold nodule, whether it is a hot hot nodule or whether it is a diffusely enlarged thyroid gland. The next test would be FNAC test fine needle aspiration cytology of the nodule is very important that helps in determining the psychological status of the nodule. It can be a benign nodule or repair it can be a malignant nodule. Especially ultrasound guided FNAC helps in arriving at fairly precise diagnosis, therefore any patient coming with thyroid swelling should undergo these tests.
