Hi, I"m Olga Korunsky and I"m a CVS pharmacist. If you have diabetes, you need a blood glucose meter to measure your blood sugar at home. According to the Food and Drug Administration, there are at least 25 different brands of meters on the market, so you can definitely find one that works best for your situation, specific needs, and habits. Be sure to think about what features will help you better manage your condition and readings, and your own lifestyle and situation before purchasing.
First, if you have trouble reading small numbers make sure you get a meter with a large display. If you sometimes forget to mark your numbers on your diabetes calendar, there are meters that record and store your numbers, and even ones that can download your records into a computer for safekeeping. If you"re looking for the fastest reading, there are meters that deliver a reading in as little as five seconds (while others can take up to 45 seconds). If you need to be sure your children could use the meter on themselves, or on you in case of an emergency, look for an easy-to-use meter they could understand. But if cost is the deciding factor, some insurance plans will only cover certain types of meters, and often pay for only a limited number of test strips per month, so be sure to find out what your insurance plan covers before ordering your meter.
If you have any questions about these methods, please talk to your CVS pharmacist. We are here to help.
