This patient presented to Dr. Umar because he was tired of the unsightly bumps on the back of his head. These bumps were caused by acne keloidalis nuchae (AKN)—a skin condition that destroys the hair follicle, causes scarring, and produces baldness at the affected site. For a long time, the patient wore his hair long to hide the bumps on the back of his head, but decided to pursue treatment to get rid of them.
His options were to be treated with monthly corticosteroid injections, which do not permanently alleviate the condition, or to have the AKN surgically removed. He chose surgical removal because he wanted a permanent solution.
Dr. Umar successfully excised the area affected by acne keloidalis nucahae. Several weeks post-surgery the area is healing and shows incredible improvement. "I"m really happy," the patient says of his results, "I like cutting my hair now."
