Milia (aka milk spots or oil seeds) are those hard, tiny little white bumps you usually find around the eye area, and they are often mistaken for stubborn whiteheads. Though they are common in newborns, they can appear on people of all ages.
Milia forms when keratin gets trapped beneath the surface of the skin, creating a cyst. Keratin is a fibrous protein, and it is the main structural component in skin, hair and nails. Don’t google image search ‘keratin cyst’. Its super gross. Milium, the singular of Milia is formed at the base of a hair follicle or sweat gland.
There are several different categories of Milia.
Neonatal milia affects around half of newborn babies, and is believed to be caused by their underdeveloped sweat glands. Milia in children disappear within a couple of weeks and don’t require treatment.
Primary milia is found on both children and adults around the eyelids, cheeks, forehead and may last several weeks or even months.
Secondary milia develops anywhere on the body where the skin has been damaged or injured in some way. It can also be caused by the long-term use of steroid creams.
Milia en plaque is a very rare form of milia that occurs on skin plaque, which is a raised, inflamed patch of skin. Milia en plaque is particularly common in middle-aged women, but the cause of it is not completely clear.
Multiple eruptive milia occurs in patches of milia that appear over several weeks to months. They mostly develop on the face, upper arms and upper torso.
In most cases, your dermatologist can identify milia by just looking at it, if not, your doctor may need to perform a skin biopsy.
Treatment isnt really necessary because milia is harmless, but it isnt exactly the cutest thing ever, and you do have the option of getting it removed. If you want to get milia removed, talk to your doctor or dermatologist. Common treatments include piercing the milium, then using a comedone extractor to remove the contents, topical creams, laser treatment, dermabrasion, and chemical peels. But there are other methods if you want to avoid doctors and needles. Try using an exfoliating treatment like the Banish Pumpkin Enzyme Masque, which contains alpha hydroxy acids that slough away dead skin cells, and also healing properties like vitamin a, vitamin c, and beta carotene. But if youre not a fan of pumpkin, don’t worry, theres still hope. The Banish Glycolic and Rose Masque also contains alpha hydroxyl acid in the form of glycolic acid, which is the safest AHA to use on your skin. Of all the AHA’s, glycolic acid has the smallest molecules, allowing it to penetrate deeper into your skin to exfoliate your pores super effectively.
Due to its antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties, aloe vera may help minimize the appearance of milia. Just massage aloe vera gel into the milia, or use the Banish Aloe Vera Oil for some extra moisturization.
